Iodine in pregnancy influences the baby’s IQ
During pregnancy, it is common for gynecologists to prescribe an iodine supplement to the future mother, since it is known that the lack of this mineral can cause brain injuries in the baby and thyroid diseases in the pregnant woman.
In addition to this, a group of researchers have recently revealed that mothers with iodine deficiency during pregnancy had children with an IQ three points lower than other children.
Iodine deficiency in pregnancy affects the IQ of children
A group of scientists, within the European project NUTRIMENTHE, coordinated by Professor Cristina Campoy Folgoso, have discovered that the lack of iodine in pregnant women has detrimental effects on the child’s cognitive development. The results of their research revealed that children born to mothers who had a iodine deficiency in pregnancy, showed at eight years of age, an IQ three points lower than the others and even worse ability to read.
Given these results, experts recommend taking enough iodine, especially in pregnant women. Iodine can be obtained from natural foods such as fish, shellfish and dairy products. However, gynecologists advise during pregnancy and lactation the daily intake of iodine, so they usually prescribe a supplement that the pregnant woman must take throughout the 40 weeks of pregnancy.
And is that iodine is essential for growth, brain development, regulation of certain metabolic processes of the body and the synthesis of thyroid hormones. A correct supply of iodine is very important then, during pregnancy.
