Best Boosters

A booster is an additional seat or half-armchair, used for the safety of the child in the car while driving. Booster seats are necessary for children who are too big for car seats, but not old enough to properly and safely use a seat belt.

The main purpose of a booster is to lift the child up to the required height, and to allow the seat belts to sit firmly across the collarbone and chest, with the lap portion fitted to the hips. This position will provide safety in an accident, according to the results of crash tests.
Attention! Booster seats are not meant for children under 4′ and lighter than 48 lbs.

Helpful tips for parents

How to choose a booster seat

  1. Buy a certified product.
  2. Choose a brand new one instead of a used one. New seats are more reliable and safe since it hasn’t been damaged or stored incorrectly.
  3. Make sure it comes with the original instructions, the serial number, name, and expiration date.
  4. Make sure the booster seat underwent crash tests.

Types of car seats for children

Car seats with a removable back are convenient for a fast-growing child. The back part is removed over time, and the lower part can be used on its own. Make sure that your product underwent all the necessary safety tests. The main advantage is that the chair ”grows” together with the child. You buy everything at once and get rid of unnecessary parts when needed.

Some car seats are attached with regular seat belts together with the child. Other boosters are fixed with Isofix and Latch straps.

The main types of boosters:

  1. Booster with a foam base. According to kids, this is one of the most convenient types. Unfortunately, these models are not the safest. Large impacts may cause the material to split, causing the child to move out of the seat belt and result in serious injuries. Pros of this model are low weight and price. The main flaw is not providing the highest level of safety.
  2. Booster with a plastic base. These models are convenient and can ensure the safety of a small passenger. When choosing this type of booster, make sure it has stiffeners that are made from durable (non-porous) plastic. Pros: lightweight and affordable. Cons: none if the manufacturer is certified.
  3. Multi layer construction. It is considered to be the best option. Advantages: guaranteed safety and easy to care for. Comfort is provided by several layers of absorbent materials on top of the frame. Disadvantages: the high price.

  1. First of all, carefully read the instructions from both the manufacturer of the booster and the vehicle.
  2. Install the booster in the back seat of the car. There are three positions: behind the driver, in the middle (then it is possible to attach the femoral and shoulder straps separately – the safest position) and diagonally from the driver (if the driver wants to turn their head to see what the baby is doing).
  3. It is strongly recommended to check the position of the booster every time before driving.

Placing your child on a booster

  1. Carefully read the instructions that come with the booster.
  2. Check the tightness of the lower belt. It should not feel too tight.
  3. The shoulder strap should be tightly fastened. It shouldn’t touch the neck or face.
  4. All belts must be straightened – they cannot be twisted for safety reasons.
  5. The booster is used at the age when the child already understands the importance of safety during the ride. Explain to your little one why being properly buckled up is so important.

When can your child ride without a booster?

Typically, kids ages 7-12 and 4’10” tall no longer need a booster. The child is already big enough to use car seat belts while sitting in a regular seat. The belts should not feel loose.

Seat belts should be tightly fastened around the hip and mid-sternum. The shoulder strap should not touch the neck. Make sure your little one sits straight, and their legs should be bent at the knees and hang freely (and not rest on the driver’s seat).

Remember that the shoulder strap must pass through the sternum to the middle of the shoulder. It should not go under the arm or behind the child’s back. Strapping up two children with one seat belt is prohibited and can be life-threatening.

How to protect the child from the airbag

In combination with regular seat belts, the airbag is another way to protect from injuries during an accident for both adults and children. In case of an accident, the impact of the airbag can cause the child serious injuries. Children are not allowed to sit in the front seat of a vehicle.

It is important to know that airbags are designed to protect an adult weighing about 165 lbs. The power of an airbag can protect only an adult or teenager.

To minimize the destructive effects of an airbag, follow these simple rules:

  1. Do not place children under 13 in the front seat of a car.
  2. Install the booster only in the back seat. If you do not have a choice and the child must sit in the front, roll the chair as far away as possible from the windshield.
  3. All new cars since 1995 have a manual side airbag switch for passengers. If you must put a child in the front seat, turn off the airbag, but do not forget to turn it back on when you remove the booster.
